“I can’t even begin to tell you how it feels to watch a fellow soldier die, right in front of your eyes, who was standing next to you not a second earlier or the
odour of twenty or so corpses weaved into the soggy mud of the trenches.”
“In the classes, we were taught that the way we were raised; native life, was wrong, we had to act like white people, dress like white people; speaking our native
tongue was forbidden, we had to speak English and if we couldn’t, we weren’t supposed to talk at all.”
